12-year trial ends with Rs.500 fine on gambler

In New Delhi after 12 years of trial, the court has convicted a man for gambling after he pleaded guilty and slapped a fine of Rs 500 on him.

On Wednesday Metropolitan Magistrate  Arvind Bansal, in an order pronounced, held Anwar Malik guilty of gambling in a public place.

The court said in the order sheet made whcih available on Thursday.  “Accused Anwar Malik submitted that he wants to plead guilty for the offence with which he had been charged,”

The court observed that the accused pleaded guilty voluntarily under the Public Gambling Act.

Magistrate said “The court is of the considered opinion that the interest of justice would be met if the convict is sentenced to pay fine of Rs 500.”

According to the prosecution, Malik was found gambling in central Delhi’s Hauz Qazi area on November 4, 2000 and arrested.

The court framed charges under the Public Gambling Act on May 29, 2004. Malik then denied charges and claimed trial. However, on Wednesday he pleaded guilty of the offence.
