The union cabinet Friday approved a proposal to place before parliament the International Labour Organisation’s (ILO) guidelines for providing a better environment to domestic workers.

The ILO’s ‘Domestic Workers Convention’ and ‘Domestic Workers Recommendation’ focus on giving more rights to domestic workforce.

The move is likely to benefit 6.4 million domestic workers in India. A large number of such workers come from poor and backward areas and are illiterate and unskilled.

‘Domestic workers constitute a huge segment of the workforce, especially in the developing countries. Domestic work is informal, undocumented and poorly regulated. Migrant domestic workers are the worse affected,’ said a statement from the government.

‘It has also been observed that domestic workers are particularly vulnerable to sexual exploitation and trafficking,’ it added.
