A petition was filed in the Delhi High Court Wednesday seeking cancellation of licence issued to a liquor shop here, observing that a school, temple, mosque and hospital are located near it.

The petition was filed before a division bench headed by Chief Justice G. Rohini, which posted the matter for further hearing Thursday.

The petition was filed by Satyamev Jayate Foundation, a Delhi-based social organisation, which sought the court’s direction for cancelling the licence of the liquor shop in Sunlight Colony in south Delhi.

“Due to opening of the retail liquor vend in the area which is near a girls’ school, temple, mosque as well as a hospital… the same is leading to building up of social unrest and tension which may lead to a law and order situation and some untoward incident,” said the petition filed by advocate R.K. Saini.

He requested the court to issue directions to the Delhi government and the excise commissioner for taking action in this regard.

He also told the court that a protest was organised Nov 9 by girl students.

The petitioner termed it a “grossly negligent, callous and deliberate inaction and abdication of public duty” on the part of the authorities for not cancelling the licence.
