Chennai floods: SC moved for better monitoring

As flood water in Chennai has started to recede, a lawyer today moved the Supreme Court seeking directions to check the drainage system in Tamil Nadu to prevent waterlogging and manage such catastrophe in future.

The Delhi-based lawyer has sought setting up of an expert committee to inspect and redesign the existing storm water drainage system in the state.

The petitioner advocate Kiruba Munusamy has made Ministry of Urban Development, Ministry of Environment, National Disaster Management Authority, Tamil Nadu government as parties in the case.

The petition claimed that “the fundamental, civil and personal rights have been violated by the respondents who are responsible and squarely liable for their negligence and failure to provide good urban drainage system, removing the silt before rainy season and cleaning of drains.”

“The respondents have not provided a proper underground drainage for storm and without effective storm water drainage, the sewerage system is also choked during the rainy season causing contamination of the stagnated rainwater resulting in spread of water borne and vulnerable diseases,” it said.
