New Delhi, A Delhi court has awarded life imprisonment to a couple who set ablaze their neighbour”s house resulting in the death of a four-and-half year old girl.

Additional Sessions Judge Ravinder Dudeja also imposed a fine of Rs 8,000 on Jahangir Puri resident Kamal and his wife Guddi, who had sprinkled oil and set their neighbour Phirangi”s hutment on fire in February 2009 following a quarrel between their sons.

The court, while convicting the couple, dismissed the defence counsel”s submissions that there was no motive on their part to commit the murder.

“Prosecution is relying on the incident of the evening of February 8, 2009 (quarrel between Phirangi”s son and son of the accused) as the motive for the murder.

“In my view, prosecution has been able to prove from the testimonies of the witnesses that because of quarrel between the children of Phirangi and the accused, Guddi had threatened to burn the jhuggi of Phirangi and therefore accused had the motive to commit murder,” the court said.

As per the prosecution, Kamal and Guddi set ablaze Phirangi”s ”jhuggi” on February 9 in which the minor girl child was seriously injured. She was rushed to the nearby hospital but was declared brought dead by the doctor.

Phirangi, in his statement, said on the evening of February 8, 2009 a quarrel took place between his son with Kamal”s sons while playing.
