A Pune court today allowed an application filed by a lawyer seeking to intervene in a suit demanding ban on “Desh Bhakt Nathuram Godse”, an upcoming film by Akhil Bhartiya Hindu Mahasabha.

Hemant Patil, who heads a political outfit, filed the original suit.

Advocate Assem Sarode, a Pune-based lawyer, today filed an application seeking to intervene and praying that the film’s release should not be stopped as the filmmaker has a constitutional right to produce a movie.

Judicial magistrate S R Nimise allowed Sarode to intervene while posting the matter for arguments on January 28, said advocate Wajid Khan, Patil’s lawyer.

The suit contends that Hindu Mahasabha general secretary Munna Kumar Sharma had told the media that “the film would show that Nathuram Godse, the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi, was a patriot while Gandhi was anti-Hindu.”

According to the suit, the film was being released on the same day (January 30) when Godse had gunned down Gandhi in 1948.

“The film has the potential to incite people on communal lines , it says”
