Tihar jail authorities Wednesday informed the Delhi High Court that they plan to give inmates telephone facility.
The proposal, which is pending with the Delhi home secretary, states: “First time offenders will be allowed telephone facilities in their ward itself where they can make one call in a week. Other prisoners can be allowed this facility once in a fortnight.”

Filing the report before a division bench of Chief Justice Ajit Prakash Shah and Justice S. Muralidhar, standing counsel for Delhi Police Meera Bhatia said: “The system will record all the conversations along with the date, time and name of the prisoner for the purpose of security.”

Bhatia also submitted the authorities are already in touch with mobile companies so that full-proof system can be started on urgent basis.

The court expressed satisfaction over the steps taken by the jail authorities and directed them to file a status report by Dec 16, the next date of hearing.

The court was hearing on the letter former top police officer R.K. Sharma, serving a life term for the murder of journalist Shivani Bhatnagar, wrote demanding telephone facilities for inmates of the country’s largest prison, which houses around 11,000 prisoners.
