The Delhi High Court Wednesday sought a response from an association of car dealers over a plea seeking to curb the collection by its members in the capital of allegedly illegal charges from car buyers.

A division bench of Acting Chief Justice A.K. Sikri and Justice R.S. Endlaw also allowed the association to become party in the case. The case would next be heard Jan 25.

The plea filed by C. Rajaram sought a direction to 69 car dealers in the city to refund the money illegally collected from vehicle buyers in the name of logistics, stocking, loading and unloading charges.

Two officials of the transport department appeared before the court and said that there was no mechanism in place to check levy of allegedly illegal charges by car dealers.

The petition said: “The Motor Licensing Officers of transport department knew very well that the authorised dealers were indulging in unscrupulous activities, but the officers of the department…deliberately ignored to take any corrective measures.”
