Dalit beaten to death in Punjab, NHRC sends notice

A notice has been issued by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to Punjab Police over the death of a Dalit labourer who was severely beaten over plucking vegetables in Kapurthala district.

According to NHRC, “The director general of police in Punjab and district magistrate of Kapurthala have been asked to submit reports within four weeks into the allegations that a Dalit man was beaten to death over plucking vegetables in district Kapurthala, Punjab.

Joginder Singh was thrashed by Amrik Singh when he saw him plucking vegetable from his field. Joginder Singh died as a result of the beating he received.

“The commission has observed that the contents of the press report, if true, raises a serious issue of violation of human rights of the deceased”
