Discom engineer’s kin gets Rs 59 lakh compensation

The family members of an engineer, who was employed with a private discom and was killed in a road accident two years ago, have been awarded a compensation of nearly Rs 59 lakh by a Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) here.

The tribunal directed United India Insurance Company Ltd, with which the offending car was insured, to pay Rs 58,94,377 to the wife, three sons and mother of deceased Mukesh Kumar, who died in the accident in August 2013.

“Considering all the documents filed by the petitioners (family members), specifically the site plan, FSL report, chargesheet… It is clear that the respondent no.1 (driver of car) was driving the vehicle in a rash and negligent manner,” MACT Presiding Officer Sanjeev Kumar Singh said.

51-year-old Kumar’s family told the tribunal that he was working as a senior engineer in BSES Yamuna Power Ltd and earning over Rs 64,000 per month.

The family, residing in Gazipur here, said in their petition that the incident took place on the night of August 22, 2013, when Kumar was going on his motorcycle from New Rohtak Rani Jhansi Road to Paharganj and the offending car came at a high speed and hit him from behind.

It said the car was being driven in a rash and negligent manner and the victim fell down on the road and sustained serious injuries. He was taken to a hospital where he died five days later.

The car driver, R Narayanan, in his written statement described the contents of the petition as false.
