The Delhi High Court today asked the city police chief to ensure that municipal corporation employees are not obstructed by the striking sanitation workers from lifting garbage from roads in the capital.

“Delhi Police Commissioner to ensure that the removal of garbages by various agencies employed by Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is not obstructed by anyone one in any manner, till further orders of this court,” a bench of Chief Justice G Rohini and Justice Jayant Nath said.

While restraining the associations of safai karamchaaris unions from obstructing removal of garbages, a function which has been outsourced to private agencies, the court also asked for the compliance report from Delhi Police chief by January 8, 2016.

The court’s interim order was passed on an application filed by East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC), which has sought direction to the safai karamchaaris working under them to comply with the court’s earlier order.

“EDMC is again facing obstruction and hindrance in lifting the garbage from the areas within its jurisdiction due to the strike and agitation by the safai karamchaaris including the joint forum of unions…,” the application said.

The court in its earlier orders passed on three different occasions, when they went on strike over non-payment of their salaries, had directed safai karamchaaris not to obstruct to the removal of garbage.

Filing fresh application, EDMC said that this was urgent as the unions have again gone on strike from October 23.

“Since then safai karamchaaris and their representatives unions are openly stopping and preventing EDMC from lifting the garbage resulting in accumulation of garbage in east Delhi all over again,” the corporation said in its application.
