The Supreme Court Wednesday asked unauthorised occupants of government houses here why they should not be evicted and ordered their names be published in the newspapers.

An apex court bench of Justice G.S. Singhvi and Justice S.J. Mukhopadhaya asked the court registry to issue notice after it was given a list of unauthorised occupants by Additional Solicitor General A.S. Chandihok.

The judges said that the list of people who were in unauthorised occupation of government accommodation be published newspapers, informing them about the action being taken against them.

The apex court, which is hearing a petition seeking necessary infrastructure for the functioning of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), during the last hearing asked the government to furnish the list of bangalows in central Delhi that were vacant.

The list of unauthorised occupants submitted to the court Wednesday included the name of Buta Singh, former chariman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes, H.S. Hanspal, former member of the National Commission for Minorities and Y.S. Dadwal, former director general of the Sashastra Seema Bal.

The court had sought the list of the vacant bangalows after it was told that the government was not providing accommodation to the chairman and the judicial members of the NGT and had asked them to take accommodation on rent.

The court also cleared the decks for the appointment of the staff of the tribunal.

The apex court Sep 19 asked the government to ensure “…effective functioning of the tribunal by providing all the facilities and amenities to the judicial members…and also to the expert members.”

The court said that the judicial members of the NGT could not be treated below their status as they had been judges of the high courts or the apex court. A former apex court judge is the chairman of the tribunal that deals with environmental matters.
