The Goa government will present and pass its own Lokayukta law in the two-day legislative assembly session starting Oct 5, Chief Minister Digambar Kamat said Monday.

Speaking to reporters after the Congress-led government’s cabinet meeting, Kamat said that the council of ministers had approved the Lok Ayukta Bill. It ‘would be tabled and passed on Oct 5’.

The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has already expressed support for the bill, with some modifications.

The party wants changes vis-a-vis bringing the law in consonance with the Right to Information (RTI) Act, which was not in existence at the time when the Goa Lokayukta Bill 2003 was first tabled.

‘The bill can be placed in the house with certain modifications on the first day of the assembly and we assure the government that we will help them pass it,’ said BJP leader Manohar Parrikar.

The monsoon session of the Goa legislative assembly has been convened for two days starting Oct 5, during which the public accounts committee’s report on illegal mining is also expected to be tabled.
