The Delhi High Court Wednesday asked the central and Delhi governments to file their replies within four weeks on a petition seeking setting up of human rights courts.

The division bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Sanjiv Khanna issued notice on a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by the Asian Centre for Human Rights, a social organisation.

The bench would hear the plea next June 1.

‘The non-establishment of human rights courts and non-appointment of special public prosecutors has been hampering trial of offences arising out of violation of human rights,’ said the petition.

‘National Human Rights Commission in its annual report of year 2001-2002 mentioned that such a court should be headed by a district sessions judge,’ said the petition.
