lawGovernment is likely to appoint new Additional Solicitors General in different High Courts to deal with increasing number of cases.

An official said that names of some senior advocates have been cleared for their appointment in High Courts of Punjab and Haryana, Karnataka, Jharkhand, Patna and Gujarat.

Efforts are also underway to appoint an ASG for the Supreme Court as one of them, L Nageshwar Rao, resigned in December last after serving for around six months as law officer in the NDA government.

Since then, the post has remained vacant and the Law Ministry is likely to announce his replacement soon, the official said.

At present, there are six ASGs for the apex court. Sources said the need for more law officers arose as the government was finding it hard to deal with matters relating to auction of coal blocks which have come under challenge.

Further, it was preparing to file an appeal in the Delhi High Court against the order of a single judge which held as illegal the ‘look out notice’ issued against Greenpeace activist Priya Pillai, the official said.

The Union Cabinet on December 10, 2014 had approved appointment of five new ASGs.

There is one ASG each in Delhi High Court, the Bombay High Court, the Calcutta High Court, the Allahabad High court and two in the Madras High Court.

A need was felt to appoint more law officers to tackle the increasing number of litigations.

Besides representing government in courts, the law officers also tender legal advice to it.
