The Gujarat High Court has questioned the state government and six municipal corporations over a petition challenging the process followed in civic election.
Acting on a petition by Pankajsinh Waghela, a division bench of Chief Justice S.J. Mukhopadhaya and Justice Akil Kureshi issued notices Monday and sought replies from the state and the corporations about the number of seats in each ward and the provisions for voting.
Yatin Oza, counsel for the petitioner, said Tuesday that the court issued notices on their plea that municipal elections were being conducted in a haphazard and improper manner.
The petitioner submitted that three persons are elected as representatives of one single ward. He said that only one representative should be elected from one ward as per the Constitution.
In Ahmedabad city corporation, there are 192 seats from which representatives are elected to manage the civic affairs in 64 wards, the petitioner claimed.
The court issued notices to the corporations and fixed the case for hearing on May 6.
