The Delhi High Court Thursday stayed the New Delhi Municipal Council’s (NDMC) proposed drive to remove illegal constructions in the Khan Market here. The drive was to begin Friday.

Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw said: “Till further order no demolition work will be carried out by the NDMC.”

The court would hear the matter April 27.

The court order came during the hearing on a petition filed by the Khan Market Traders Association which challenged the NDMC’s March 15 notice for removal of illegal constructions from the markets.

The civic agency warned of sealing buildings with illegal constructions unless their owners removed these on their own.

The traders’ petition said they have deposited conversion charges – for regularising the illegal constructions – as demanded by the NDMC but they have been getting repeated threats for demolition from the civic agency.

The NDMC has decided to seal all second and third floors of commercial establishments in Khan Market, saying they are illegal.
