Madras HC moved over disappearance of Dalit mechanic

A Madras High Court Benchhere today ordered police to produce a Dalit mechanic in the court and set him at liberty, on a petition by his wife, who has alleged that the police took no action to find him despite her filing a missing complaint.

Passing interim orders on a habeas corpus petition by K Mahapriya, mechanic’s wife, of Theni District, seeking a direction to the police to produce him in the court and set him at liberty, a bench comprising Justice A Selvam and G Chokalingam directed Police to file their counter on March 9.

The petitioner submitted that her husband Kalaivanan, working as a mechanic in a two-wheeler dealer company, went missing on February 2 last when he was taking a bike for test ride. A police complaint was registered.

The bike was found at Singapathi Fort Hills, but Kalaivanan was missing. There was a heated exchange between Sannasi, the proprietor of the company, and Vicky, his son.

Some one had allegdly stabbed him on that day. Though she herself gave a complaint on February 4, suspecting that her husband could have been stabbed by Sannasi, Vicky and Thangaprakash.

No action was taken against them by the SP of Theni or local police. It seemed Sannasi and Vicky were close to a minister, and hence they were not in a position to enquire, she alleged.

She said Vicky, Sannasi could have done some thing to her husband and detained him illegally orhad killed him and buried his body. Her complaint to the police did not evoke any response.
