ccThe Malta’s Minister for Social Dialogue, Consumer Affairs and Civil Liberties said Monday that the legalisation of abortion is a “categorical no at this point in time”.

Speaking at a press conference in the capital city on the topic of the newly passed civil union’s law which established gay couples with same rights, responsibilities, and obligations as marriage, including the right of joint adoption, Social Minister Helena Dalli said it “is only the first step of this Government in respect for minority rights”, Xinhua reported.

Referring to abortion, she said she cannot speak for the prime minister but she knows that the prime minister is also against abortion.

Abortion in Malta is illegal and constitutes a criminal offence in all circumstances.

Unlike other EU member states, Malta is now the only European country without a life-saving abortion law.
