Neeraj Kumar, a 1976 batch IPS officer of AGMU cadre, will be the new Police Commissioner of Delhi.

Mr. Neeraj  Kumar, who right now is Director-General (Prisons), will take over from B. K. Gupta on Saturday.

Talking about his new assignment, Mr. Neeraj  Kumar told a news agency that it was a matter of “great honour” and that he would try hard to “fulfil the expectations”.

Mr. Kumar, who had proceeded to the Central Bureau of Investigation on deputation following his promotion to the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police in 1993, had led the investigations into the Mumbai serial blasts leading to the arrest of seven members of the Memon family and 16 others. The charge-sheets filed by the CBI during his tenure later led to the conviction of 100 out of the 123 accused in the case.

His tenure at CBI was also marked by the unearthing of the UTI scam, the arrest and deportation of American Center attack mastermind Aftab Ansari, and cracking of the cricket match-fixing scandal. He is also credited with the arrest of Jagtar Singh Tara, an accused in the Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh assassination case, leading to the unravelling of the conspiracy.

Later, with Mr. Kumar as Joint Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) in 2002, the anti-terror squad of Delhi Police carried out several counter-terror operations leading to neutralisation of notorious Pakistani terrorists.
