firThe National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Friday pulled up the Uttar Pradesh Police for not registering FIRs when people of Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) lodged complaints.

It also advised the police to take all complaints brought by SC and ST people seriously, said an official.

In a suo motu cognisance taken by the commission of the atrocities faced by SC and ST people in Meerut, Bulandshahr, Ghaziabad and Gautam Buddh Nagar of Uttar Pradesh, it was found that the UP Police had not registered any FIR against those who tortured these people.

“NHRC, in its report, has clearly said the police personnel can also face criminal action under the Indian Penal Code for refraining from performing their duty,” said NHRC member Satyabrata Paul.

He said the SC and ST people were facing physical assault from those belonging to the higher strata of society and whenever victims tried to register a complaint, police officials turned down away.

“Taking suo motu cognisance of cases of atrocities in these four districts, 35 cases were disposed off and the UP Police officials asked to register FIR against all the culprits in the remaining cases and immediately take up investigation,” said Paul.
