Railway engg gets 3-yr RI in DA case : Court

A local court of Visakhapatnam has awarded three years’ rigorous imprisonment to a section engineer working with the South Central Railwayfor acquiring assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.

Second Additional Special Judge for CBI cases G Sunitha yesterday sentenced Katakam Jogendra Reddy, senior section engineer, Wagon Workshop, South Central Railway at Guntupalli, to three-year RI for amassing disproportionate assets.

The judge also slapped a fine of Rs 25,000 on him.

Superintendent of Police, CBI, R Gopala Krishna Rao said in a statement that from January 1, 2000, to November 30, 2009, Reddy, while working as senior section engineer, was in possession of movable and immovable properties in his and his family members’ names, disproportionate to his known sources of income to the tune of Rs 1.94 crore which he could not satisfactorily account for.

His wife Katakam Sivamma, by allowing her husband to acquire assets in her name, abetted the commission of offence of amassing disproportionate wealth, police said.

After conducting regular trial, the court pronounced the judgement while convicting Reddy for offence under sections 13(2) read with 13(1)(e) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.

However, Reddy’s wife Sivamma was acquitted in the case.
