Green signal to Kudankulam nuclear power plant has given by the Supreme Court.

A bench comprising Justices K S Radhakrishnan and Dipak Misra dismissed a PIL challenging the commissioning of the nuclear power plant on the grounds that adequate relief and rehabilitation coupled with safety measures are not in place.

The petitioner had sought directions to the Centre and state of  Tamil Nadu to shift the nuclear plant out of the state.

The petitioner said, the nuclear plant will not only damage the environment but would also cause heavy loss of life and property in case of an untoward incident.

The Supreme Court has laid down 15 guidelines to ensure adequate safety measures are in place and the damage in the surrounding areas is minimised.

The apex court has also directed the authorities to see to it that criminal cases filed against those agitating against nuclear plant are withdrawn.
