Centrally Empowered Committee has been appointed by the Supreme court of India for the approval of selling of 56000 trees to widen Delhi Agra highway.

The recommendation has shocked and surprised the environmentalists who are of the opinion that the destruction of trees on such a large scale would cause extensive damage to the environment in the area.

Counsel for Pollution Control Board Mr Vijay Panjawani has even doubted the integrity of CEC members and has alleged that the Supreme Court is being misled.

Environmentalists have demanded compensatory planting of trees to make up for the damage to the environment.

Development at the cost of nature is not permissible, according to the environmentalists.
