Seven former students of the B.R. Ambedkar National Institute of Technology (NIT) here were Tuesday awarded three years’ imprisonment by a Punjab court for driving a first year student to death due to merciless ragging in 2005.

Additional District and session Judge S.K. Singla also slapped a fine on the convicts and acquitted four others, including a girl.

Amit Kumar Gangwar, an industrial engineering student, was subjected to ragging, forcing him to end his life by jumping in front of a train in October 2005, the prosecution said.

In a suicide note, found from the victim’s hostel room, Amit named his seniors, including a girl, for tormenting him. The students named in the suicide note were later expelled by the NIT authorities.

Amits father, Triveni Sahai, an armyman, said that his son ended his life due to ragging.
