New Delhi, The Supreme Court today permitted the Central government to issue notification for the implementation of Majithia committee recommendations for hike in wages for journalists and non-journalists.

A bench comprising Justices Dalveer Bhandari and Deepak Verma, however, made it clear that it was only an interim decision and shall be subject to the outcome of the present petition.

Newspaper owners have been opposing the recommendation of Majithia committee on the grounds of financial implications of the proposal.

The committee has recommended a hike of over 30 per cent in the wages of journalists and non-journalists employed in the newspaper industry both in electronic and print media.

Newspaper owner associations, which also includes news agencies, are contending that they are not in a position to bear the additional burden of implementation of the recommendations of the committee due to financial constraints.
