The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Wednesday issued notice to the West Bengal government over three starvation deaths in a tea estate in Jalpaiguri district.

Among those who reportedly died of starvation was a child.

“Taking congnisance of news reports, we have issued notice to the West Bengal chief secretary giving him four weeks to report about the deaths of two women and a child resulting from hunger. Those who starved to death got no help at Kumlai Tea Estate under Malbazar in Jalpaiguri district,” an NHRC official said.

The commission has observed that the contents of a report appearing in the press, if true, raise the serious issue of violation of the rights of workers.

According to media reports of Aug 3, the Kumlai Tea Estate has been reeling under a financial crisis. Workers have not received their wages for two months, and rations for 62 weeks are pending.

It was reported that the Kumlai Tea Estate was abandoned by its management.
