A 32-year-old man, who was grievously injured in a road accident involving a rashly driven truck, has been awarded a compensation of over Rs 22 lakh by a Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) here.

MACT Presiding Officer Manish Gupta directed Oriental Insurance Company Ltd, insurer of the offending truck, to pay Rs 22,52,494 to the victim Vijay Manjhi who was injured in 2012.

“In view of the evidence on record and the facts and circumstances as discussed, I am of the considered opinion that the accident occurred due to rash and negligent driving of the offending vehicle by the driver and due to which the petitioner (Vijay) suffered injuries on the relevant date, place and time,” the Presiding Officer said.

According to the complaint, on May 4, 2012, while Vijay, along with his relative, was going towards his house on a motorcycle, a truck driven in rashly and negligent manner, hit the two-wheeler from behind near Shakurpur here.

Due to the impact, he fell down and sustained grievous injuries. He was immediately taken to hospital and was discharged after 12 days.

As per the hospital report, he suffered fracture on left hand and suffered 80 percent permanent disability in upper left limb.

Vijay had claimed before the tribunal that he was employed as an assistant with the medical centre and was earning Rs 15,000 per month.

The driver of the offending truck did not file any submission while the insurance company denied the allegations
