The National Association of Street Vendors of India (NASVI) Wednesday hailed the Supreme Court’s verdict on vendors’ right to carry on their business.
Representing more than 540 street vendors organisations across 23 states of the country, it further demanded that a comprehensive legislation on the lines of National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) must be enacted to protect and promote livelihood of more than 10 million vendors of the country.
‘It is the constitutional obligation of the union government to enact a law for the entire mass of street vendors living in India,’ said Arbind Singh, national coordinator of NASVI.
Moreover, vendors face problems due to varying interpretations of the National Policy on Urban Street Vendors and the schemes framed under it by municipal bodies, police and high courts, Singh said.
‘It should not be left to states to enact separate laws,’ Singh added.
