ddA 20-year-old man has been sentenced to three years in prison for racially motivated attacks on two Indian nationals in Australia.

Brian Lou Douglas Lawton and another man approached a 26-year-old Indian man in north Queensland in 2012 and demanded money, the Townsville district court heard on Monday.

After the man said he did not have money, Lawton punched and kicked him before he ran for help, ABC News reported.

Later that night, the victim’s 29-year-old housemate, also an Indian national, was attacked by Lawton with an iron bar, leaving him with broken teeth.

The crown prosecutor told the court, Lawton was yelling phrases like, “get out of my country”.

In his victim impact statement, the 29-year-old said he suffered from low self-esteem after the attack.

Lawton, who was charged with attempted robbery and assault, is not eligible for parole until April 30 next year.
