NEW DELHI: Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s controversial nomination to the Apex Court advanced a step further this morning, when senators voted 51 to 49 to advance to a final confirmation vote, as the ruling Republican party managed to gain the crucial backing of enough Senators needed to confirm his nomination.
During a frenzied day Friday on Capitol Hill, two Republicans – Susan Collins of Maine and Jeff Flake of Arizona – and one Democrat – Joe Manchin III of West Virginia – said they would vote for Kavanaugh, whose confirmation seemed in peril three weeks ago over allegations of sexual misconduct. Collins, who has been the focus of a passionate campaign by women’s rights activists and sexual assault survivors, has scheduled a press conference for to announce how she plans to vote tomorrow. Already, though, some women have expressed bitter disappointment at her vote.
The final Senate vote on the Supreme Court nominee is likely to be held Saturday.
