Buddhadeb summoned by commission probing 1993 police firing

aaThe Enquiry Commission set up by the Trinamool Congress government to probe the police firing on the Youth Congress supporters on July 21, 1993 has summoned the former West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.

“To record his views he has been requested to appear before the Commission on February 26. An order asking him to appear before the Commission has already been issued,” Justice (retd) Sushanta Chatterjee who is heading the Commission told The Hindu on Saturday. Mr. Bhattacharjee was the State’s Information and Cultural Affairs Minister when the incident took place. Altogether 13 persons had died and about 200 sustained injuries in the incident.

“There are references in the name of Mr. Bhattacharjee in media reports published after the incident on whether a judicial enquiry be set up to probe the incident or not, ”he said, adding “in the light of evidences that has surfaced the Commission seems it fit to summon him.”

Justice Chatterjee said the Commission had recorded the statements of a number of former Ministers of the previous government. Leaders of different political parties, including the chairperson of the Left Front Biman Bose had also deposed before the Commission, he said. Twenty years after the firing, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in 2013 had ordered the setting up of the Inquiry Commission under of the Commission of Inquiry Act, 1952.
