A Delhi court today issued notice on a batch of election petitions challenging the symbols alloted to Shiromani Akali Dal and Shiromani Akali Dal (Delhi) and alleging these are religious parties not registered under the Societies Registration Act.

One of the 12 petitions was filed by Surinder Singh of Panthak Sewa Dal, who has lost the elections.

Additional District Judge Kamini Lau issued summons to the parties on the suit for March 20 and directed the Directorate of Gurudwara Elections to take necessary steps to preserve the record relating to election of the ward, under challenge, and produce it before the court as and when so directed.

“In the meanwhile, all proceedings conducted pursuant to declaration of results of the election dated February 26 shall be subject to the outcome of this election petition till the next date of hearing,” the court said.

The petitions, filed through advocates Inder Chand and Siddharth Narwal, said the winning candidate Balbir Singh belongs to Shiromani Akali Dal (Delhi) “which is a religious party but has not been registered under the Societies Registration Act”.

During the hearing, the advocates argued that Directorate of Gurudwara Elections improperly allocated the reserved symbols to the candidates sponsored by the parties not registered under the Society Registration Act, 1860.
