The Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill has been referred by the Union Cabinet which provides for life imprisonment for the rape convicts before the Group of Ministers (GoM) for arriving at clarity before final approval by the Cabinet.

With this decision, the existing Ordinance on the matter will come up before the Cabinet once the GoM comprising Ministers of Home, Finance, Law, Communications and Women and Child Development discuss threadbare all issues agitating the minds of the society.

Women and Child Development Minister Krishna Tirath told that there was no major differences in the Cabinet on the issue. However, matters like age of consent for sex and age for trial of juvenile offenders need more debate before arriving at a final decision.

There is already an Ordinance on the issue but parliamentary approval will be needed to make it a law.
