A group of doctors Friday filed a petition in the Gujarat High Court, seeking to disqualify Medical Council of India’s tainted former chief Ketan Desai from the senate of the Gujarat University.

Desai was recently elected unopposed to the senate on a seat meant for a registered medical practitioner.

‘Desai managed to get elected ‘unopposed’ to the senate in the most brazen manner for a seat exclusively for the registered medical graduates despite having his registration already cancelled by the MCI,’ Dr. Kunal Saha, president of People for Better Treatment which filed the petition, told.

‘The GU vice-chancellor and the Gujarat government were also made parties in the writ petition because they also did not take any step to prevent Desai,’ Saha added.

Desai was arrested in April this year for allegedly taking Rs. 2 crore bribe from a Punjab-based medical college. The Medical Council of India suspended his medical license in October.
