The High Court in Delhi  gave its approval to the setting up of five fast-track courts to deal with cases of sexual assault on women.

A division bench of Chief Justice D. Murugesan and Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw while taking suo moto cognizance of a woman’s gang-rape in a bus told that they “immediately accepted” Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit’s proposal on the fast-track courts.

The chief justice, however, told that “unless investigation was conducted properly and witnesses produced during trial, even fast track courts would not serve any purpose, rather it will lead to acquittal within three months”.

The court said, “This incident is of great concern for all the citizens of the city as it relates to the safety, particularly of women and girl children.”

The bench also added, “Nobody is safe here, it’s repeatedly seen in Delhi.”

The court also directed the government and the police commissioner that investigations “must be of high standard” and concluded “as expeditiously as possible”.

It asked a special investigation team, headed by Deputy Commissioner of Police Chhaya Sharma, to file a status report on the probe by Friday, the next date of hearing.
