A former police officer, who was arrested and dismissed from service on charges of raping two minor sisters two years ago in South West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya, was granted bail by a local court here.

Nurul Islam, a former sub-inspector and in-charge of Ampati Police Station, was granted bail by the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate K M Lyngdoh Nongbri yesterday after his 14 day judicial custody was over.

The court granted bail against a surety of Rs 1 lakh and subject to his fulfillment of stringent conditions laid down by the court, South West Garo Hills district Addl S P Lethindra Sangma said.

Islam was directed not to abscond or hamper with the investigation, threaten or go anywhere near the victims, complainants or witnesses and remain within the jurisdiction of the court, he said.

The former cop was charged of raping a minor girl in Ampati police station two years ago and subsequently raping her sister too in their house a couple of weeks later.

After absconding since 2013, Islam had surrendered voluntarily before a court here last month.
