Lawyers of six district courts in Delhi today called off their 15-day strike after the Rajya Sabha passed the Delhi High Court (Amendment) bill to increase pecuniary jurisdiction of the trial courts here.
The coordination committee of all district courts Bar Associations was observing the strike against the delay in tabling in Parliament the amended bill to enhance the pecuniary jurisdiction of trial courts in Delhi from Rs 20 lakh to Rs two crore.
Advocate Sanjeev Nasiar, Convenor of the coordination committee, said the lawyers have decided to call off their strike as the Rajya Sabha today passed the Delhi High Court (Amendment) Bill, 2015.
“We thank all the members of Rajya Sabha for supporting us, especially to Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Law Minister D V Sadanand Gowda.
“We request the Lok Sabha to fulfill the formalities of the bill in next two days,” Nasiar said.
Lawyers of all the six district courts – Tis Hazari, Patiala House, Karkardooma, Rohini, Saket and Dwarka – were observing strike since April 22 against the delay in enhancing the pecuniary jurisdiction, thus affecting judicial work in all these courts.
The lawyers’ body had earlier said that full bench of Delhi High Court had recommended to the central government that pecuniary jurisdiction of trial courts here be enhanced from existing Rs 20 lakh to Rs 2 crore, but nothing was done till now.
