The Supreme Court Thursday told the central government that the prices of medicines should not rise further.

“It should go down, not go up,” said an apex court bench of Justice G.S. Singhvi and Justice S.J. Mukhopadhaya.

The bench expressed the view that prices of medicines and ordinary lab tests were already too high and cautioned the government to ensure that they do not shoot up further.

The observation came while hearing a public suit by the All India Drug Action Network of several NGOs which challenged the government’s proposed policy on drug pricing.

  1. The Hon’ble Supreme Court of India has rightly observed in this case concerning citizen’s Right to life in India. However, in the present day governance, it will be futile to seek a respite to future rises on this count because all such components that go into in determining the price of a product i.e. any drug or medicament as well as any service like health oriented diagnostics are not controllable through any enforcement. In such an event , the only two options available to Govt. are either to subsidise the drug or lab. services or to restrict these to Govt. hospitals, stores and diagnostic facilities.
Again,we have already seen the fate of Jana ausadhi medicine stores launched last year to provide medicines at low/ affordable costs.
