ddNational Human Rights Commission Wednesday issued a notice to the Delhi Government seeking a report on the death of two homeless persons near a shelter home here.

Notices in this regard have been issued to the Chief Secretary, Secretary, Department of Social Welfare and the Chief Executive Officer, Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board of the Delhi Government, according to a NHRC statement.

The officials have been given four weeks time to submit their reports.

They have also been directed to inform the Commission about the steps taken to protect the poor homeless persons from cold.

The notices were issued after the Commission took suo motu cognizance of a media report about two homeless persons found dead at a distance of 30 to 40 feet in Yamuna Pusta area in East Delhi on January 1.

Reportedly, the night shelter is only two to three minutes walking distance from where the bodies were found. However, many homeless people are turned away as there is no space at the shelter home.

The Commission has observed that the press report, if true, raises a serious question of violation of human rights of the homeless persons in Delhi.
