The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has asked Myanmar’s rights panel to engage with the government at Yangon to press for a solution to the issue of hundreds of Mayanmarese asylum seekers in India, an official said Friday.

“The issue was raised by NHRC during its meeting here with a visiting delegation of the Myanmar National Human Rights Commission headed by its chairman Win Mra,” said the NHRC official.

Oppressed by Myanmar’s junta regime, hundreds of asylum-seekers from Myanmar’s Rohingya Muslim community have been demanding refugee status in India.

“Win Mra assured the commission that he would take up the matter with the Myanmar government for consideration of action on the issue,” said an official.

Recently, these asylum seekers living in different parts of the country had camped at UNHCR office in Delhi to demand refugee status.

The delegation was on a three day visit May 22-24 to interact with NHRC and understand its structure, jurisdiction, functioning and complaint management system.

NHRC chairperson K.G. Balakrishnan, members and senior officers interacted with the visiting delegates.

“There have been media reports on several refugees from Myanmar in India who allegedly due to fear of widespread and systematic persecution at the hands of ruling junta had escaped to India,” said an NHRC official.
