Re-conduct AIPMT exam by August 16: SC to CBSE

The Supreme Court (SC) on Friday extended till August 16 the deadline for holding the All India Pre-Medical Test and declaring the results.

A Bench of Justices AK Agrawal and AM Sapre allowed more time for the drill on CBSE’s plea. All the four counseling for AIPMT should be over by September 11, it said. On June 15, the SC had asked the CBSE to hold the retest within four weeks.

It had scrapped the May 3 test in view of irregularities by some students.

Twenty-four persons, including gang members, middlemen, subject experts hired to solve question papers, AIPMT candidates and their family members, have been arrested from different parts of the country in connection with the case so far.

However, the alleged kingpin of the case, Roop Singh Dangi, continues to evade arrest. On May 3, the Rohtak range police arrested four persons, including two dental surgeons and an MBBS student. Answer keys, mobile chips, ear phones, bluetooth devices and digital watches with in-built cameras were seized from them.

The miscreants planned to smuggle these things into the examination hall by hiding these in the clothes of candidates who had agreed to pay Rs 15 to 20 lakh for the “deal”. After getting the paper out with the help of their accomplices taking the exam, the gang members would get it solved by subject experts.

The answer key(s) thus prepared had to be passed on to the candidates through these gadgets. An SIT was formed and several more persons were arrested in connection with the case subsequently.
