The Supreme Court has upheld the death penalty of Lashkar-e-Taiba militant Mohamad Arif alias Ashfaq, the accused in the Red Fort Attack case in the year 2000. He had earlier challenged the verdict by the Delhi High Court in 2007 that had delivered a death sentence to him. He was awarded the sentence by Additional Session Judge OP Saini at the Delhi trial court.

Arif was convicted of murder, waging war against the Government of India and criminal conspiracy. The Red Fort Attack was seen as a serious offence that hit the Indian spirit. The attack led to the death of three army men.

The sensational Red Fort attack case had seen two LeT terrorists storm into the Red Fort on Dec 22, 2000 and opening fire. In the fierce exchange of fire later, three army men lost their lives. Arif was one of the accused in the case and is the only one to have received a death penalty in the case. He has been serving a jail sentence for the past 11 years.

Arif was caught along with his wife Rehmana Yousuf Farooqui following an encounter in the Jamia Nagar area of south Delhi on Dec 26, 2000. The Delhi Police had subsequently filed a charge sheet against Arif and 21 other people in the case.
