A 63-year-old sorcery practitioner, employed by a woman’s husband to rid her of the purported spell of evil spirit, has been sentenced to two years in jail for outraging her modesty and assaulting her.
Additional Sessions Judge Mahesh Chander Gupta ordered jail term for Delhi resident Sallamuddin, Sorcery practitioner, for outraging the woman’s modesty, but acquitted him of the charges of raping her.
“… Having regard to the serious nature of offence and the manner of its committal by the convict, at the time, when the prosecutrix had submitted herself to him in the belief that convict will provide relief to her from the effect of three planets (teen grah)…,
“I am of considered opinion that the ends of justice would meet by sentencing convict Sallamuddin to undergo rigorous imprisonment for two years…,” the court said, while also imposing a fine of Rs 10,000 on him.
Convict Sallamuddin a Sorcery practitioner was arrested by police on a complaint of rape lodged by the woman’s husband who said his wife was “suffering from the effect of evil spirits” and he contacted Sallamuddin on his neighbours’ advice for curing her.
After coming to his house, Sallamuddin sent him to a nearby temple to bring holy water from there, said the man, adding in his absence, he raped his wife.
The court, however, acquitted Sallamuddin of rape charges saying the prosecution has failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt.
