A local court has acquitted two SP MLAs who were facing trial for allegedly abducting voters during elections for the post of block head in Jahangirabad here.

MLA Bhagwan Sharma alias Guddu Pandit and his younger brother Mukesh Sharma, were yesterday cleared of the charges by the court of Special Judge Rajat Singh Jain after all the eight witnesses and complainant in the case turned hostile.

The MLAs were booked under Gangster Act and National Security Act for abducting voters during polls for the post of Jahangirabad Block’s head conducted on Dec 22, 2010.

A complaint in this regard was filed with the police by Vijendra Singh, who also contested for the post, public counsel Ravindra Sharma said.

At the time of incident, the two were BSP MLAs. They had also spent six months in jail after their arrest in connection with the case and were later suspended by the BSP. Ruling Samajwadi Party later inducted them into its ranks in December 2011.
