New Delhi, The Supreme Court will hear tomorrow a petition seeking CBI inquiry into the alleged misuse of Youth Public Fund by the Mayawati government in the construction of memorials and statues of Dalit leaders across the state.

A bench, comprising Justices B N Agrawal and Aftab Alam, would also hear the contempt of court case initiated suo motto against the UP Chief Secretary for continuing construction work in seven memorials and parks in Lucknow despite the assurance given to the apex court on September 8 that no construction would take place at Kansiram Smriti Sthal and Rama Devi Ambedkar Park and four other parks in the state capital.

There have been fresh media reports that the construction was still continuing at several places in Lucknow, defying the apex court’s directions.

The state government, in its fresh additional affidavit filed in the Supreme Court, has, however, denied the media reports as false and taken a stand that the construction was being carried out only at places in relation to which no court proceedings were pending.

The apex court had issued showcause notice to the state Chief Secretary Atul Kumar Gupta, asking him to explain why contempt of court proceedings should not be initiated against him for deliberate and wilful disobedience of the directions of the apex court.

According to the petitioner on the main case, the government has decided to spend over Rs 2,000 crore for construction of parks and statues and the apex court has taken a serious view of the colossal waste of public money.
