The Supreme Court will hear a petition seeking directions to Justice Nanavati Commission to summon Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for his alleged role in the 2002 communal riots. A bench comprising Justices D K Jain and Anil R Dave had issued notices to Mr Modi and Justice Nanavati Commission on a petition, filed by Amrish Patel. The apex court on March 23 had recalled the notices it had earlier issued on the two petitions under the wrong impression that the petition related to Nanavati Commission, when in fact, the petitions were in connection with Godhra train burning incident. Mr Patel contended that Justice Nanavati Commission is conducting the inquiry in a baised manner as it has refused to summon Mr Modi along with some of his ministers and bureaucrats to examine their role in the Gujarat communal riots.
