ddA number of victims of medical negligence Wednesday staged a protest in the capital, demanding justice and accountability from the health care system.
“The main aim of our protest is to raise awareness among the public that they should fight when met with medical negligence,” Kunal Saha, president of People for Better Treatment (PBT), told IANS. The victims, who have seen their family members suffer due to medical negligence, said there was need to bring transparency in the health care system of the country.
“It is not the hospitals but the doctors who are responsible for such negligence. So there should also be a law for immediate cancellation of doctors’ licences in any grave matters of negligence,” Saha said.
Representatives of the PBT also met Delhi Health Minister Satyendra Jain, who promised to eradicate corruption within the system. “We are only demanding a proper regulatory body.
If the new government wants to bring change, it has to start with the revamping of the Delhi Medical Council,” said Subhra Verma, daughter of late Justice J.S. Verma, who was chairman of the National Human Rights Commission and who left his mark on laws governing rape.
