The Delhi High Court Wednesday issued notices to the central government through the human resource development ministry, the University Grants Commission (UGC) against the continuation of G.N. Qazi as Jamia Hamdard vice-chancellor as he turned 65 in August last year.<\/p>\n
Justice Siddharth Mridul sought their response as well of the Jamia Hamdard Society, by May 23, on a plea of Hamdard University Teachers’ Association (HUTA) contending that as per the terms and conditions of Qazi’s appointment in October 2008, the VC is appointed either for five years or till he attains the age of 65, whichever is earlier.<\/p>\n
Qazi completed the age of 65 years on Aug 14, 2011, the HUTA said.<\/p>\n
According to the petition, the varsity’s executive council, however, has wrongly selected him for another term and extended his service for five more years citing a order issued by the UGC.<\/p>\n
“On March 14, 2009, the executive council has considered and approved the enhancement in the age of superannuation of VC from 65 years to 70 years as per the direction issued by UGC dated on Nov 6, 2008, which is after the appointment of Qazi and the UGC direction would not be applicable on him.”<\/p>\n
“Despite representations to the chancellor, nothing has been done to withdraw the order of the registrar containing the executive council’s approval to extend the service of Qazi for another five years,” the HUTA said in its petition.<\/p>\n
