The Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor in south Delhi is creating chaos, the Delhi High Court said Wednesday while suggesting to the government that it conduct a scientific study into its functioning.<\/p>\n
The division bench of Acting Chief Justice A.K. Sikri and Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw asked the government to consider involving expert agencies like the Central Road Research Institute for the study.<\/p>\n
“Is there any scientific study made so far,” the bench asked, adding that the corridor was creating more “chaos”.<\/p>\n
Questioning the effectiveness of the BRT corridor, the court said that many judicial officers were facing problems in reaching the Saket district court complex on time because of traffic congestion linked to rapid transit system.<\/p>\n
The order came on a petition seeking permission for autorickshaws and cars to run on the special corridor reserved for buses.<\/p>\n
The corridor which was aimed to ease traffic and check accidents has been facing criticism since its inauguration in 2008 for allegedly causing traffic jams along a 5.8 km stretch between Ambedkar Nagar and Moolchand Hospital.<\/p>\n
The court granted a week to the government to respond on the issue.<\/p>\n
The petition was filed by Nyay Bhoomi, an organisation representing autorickshaw drivers.<\/p>\n
The petition said: “For smooth traffic movement on the BRT corridor between Ambedkar Nagar and Moolchand flyover, the government should not restrain vehicles other than buses to ply in the bus lane.”<\/p>\n
